So Wear The Dress!

I’m sure you’ve seen #SoWearTheDress splashed all over social media. Here’s a little secret: when I was about 14, a family friend commented on my body as I strolled by in a dress. She said, “You know, pants look way better on your shape.” Now, before you roll your eyes, let me explain. Many of us Africans grew up in communities where our bodies were up for discussion. Comments like “You’re gaining weight,” “You look too skinny,” or “No, not that girl; I mean the one with the K leg,” were all too common. We weren’t raised in a culture that shied away from compliments or dishing out criticisms about bodies and fashion choices. Tough love? Perhaps. But these experiences stick with us, and many would argue we are stronger for it.

Fast forward to a trip to Lagos to visit my sister. We stood side by side, facing her wardrobe, trying to decide what she should wear for a work party. “How about the pants and this top?” I suggested. “No, too busy.” “Okay, how about this dressy pant suit piece?” “No, it’s not flattering.” After what felt like hours of deliberation and trying on several options, I said, “Remember the white dress you wore last year? Wear the dress.” “Oh, you’re right! I do like that dress!” So I yelled, “So wear the dress!” She wore it, and it was perfection! The dress is always a great option.

Dresses are the superpowers of the fashion world. Despite what that family friend thought, dresses flatter every body type and truly are the path of least resistance. The key is finding the right length, a complementary color, and the perfect fit. Tall? A maxi dress is ideal. Short? A mini dress or an A-line style will work wonders for you. This may not be gospel, but trust me—a well-tailored dress is the holy grail for all the girlies.

And don’t forget to accessorize! Earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces will add that extra je ne sais quoi to any look. You have my word. So, the next time you’re faced with a monumental outfit decision, we urge you to embrace the femininity of a simple dress. You better believe we’ll be cheering you on as you strut across your life’s stage!
